A well-constructed job analysis (JA) study is the foundation of a defensible professional certification program, establishing the link between test scores achieved on a certifying examination and the core knowledge, skills, and abilities that all competent practitioners must possess. A successful JA study promotes exam content that is relevant, fair, and appropriate, which in turn leads to legally-defensible, high-quality certification programs.
To ensure that all certifying exams reflect current acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) practice, the NCCAOM conducts a research-based JA study at minimum every 5 years. The most recent JA study, completed in November 2017, was conducted only 4 years after the prior JA study in 2013. Part of the reason for this was to advance the NCCAOM’s efforts to grant reciprocal certification to state-licensed acupuncturists who passed the California Acupuncture Licensure Examination (CALE). While the primary purpose of a JA study is to update the NCCAOM exam content outlines to reflect current, entry-level AOM practice, another important purpose is to establish a practice-profile of licensed acupuncturists. To collect this information, the NCCAOM conducts the only national survey of the AOM profession. The purpose of the survey is to gather job-related data from practitioners including:
- Demographic characteristics such as practice type/setting, U.S. state of practice, gender, race and ethnicity
- What knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) are used on-the-job, and how important they are to safe and effective practice
- Biomedical pharmaceutical classes, supplements, and medical conditions encountered in practice
- Acupuncture techniques and Extra Points used in practice
- Formulas and individual herbs applied and/or prescribed in practice
